By Mr. Amadi Gabriel A and Mr. Kamndu Ibrahim B. (Lecturers Institute of Archaeology and Museum study, Jos)
Nigeria became a nation in 1914, when the Lagos colony and Southern and Northern protectorates where amalgamated. Before this time, British presence had been felt in many riverine communities, including Akwete, in the present day Southern Senatorial Zone of Abia State. This piece of work is focused on British adventure into Akwete, their activities in Akwete, how the people of Akwete reacted to British presence and development, thereafter. The research was conducted using the ethnographic research model. Elderly Men and Woman provided most of the data used in this report.

PROTECTING CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS FROM SEXUAL ABUSE

By Osim Jones Usim, ESQ, MCRP, LLM, BL, L.L.B, Executive Director Advocates Centre for Children and Youth Welfare.

There is a consistent growth in reported incidences of sexual abuse of children and adolescents in the society today than ever before. Some segment of the society have attributed this ugly development to the existence of hardcore pictures and pornographic materials which depict children as porn actors too.

The above obviously disturbing development has made it a duty for parents and adults to rise up and do all they could to protect the children from sexual abuse. In doing so the society must clearly differentiate between sexual abuse of children and Rape because of its interchangeable usage.

TEENS CORNER - Prince Emmanuel C. Umahi writes on LIFE

A wise man once asked me the meaning of LIFE
I answered and said that it’s all about making it, having kids and a very beautiful wife,
He laughed and told me that there’s more to that,
So I asked, he then said that Life’s like a CONTRACT
     Where everything is more than the signed papers;
And its challenges are worst than a child’s dirty diaper,
      That has an awful smell
But in as much, he said that I should recall that every legend has a story to tell.

TOWARDS UNDERSTANDING CHILD PROTECTION NEEDS - Part Two

By Osim Jones Usim, ESQ, MCRP, LLM, BL, L.L.B, Executive Director Advocates Centre for Children and Youth Welfare.

APPROACH TO CHILD PROTECTION:
By approach to Child Protection, what is meant is the ability to understand the protection needs of the Child and the steps to take that will guide anyone who wants to prevent abuse of Children.
In 2003 the Child Rights Act, became a law specifically enacted for protecting the rights of Children in Nigeria. The Child Rights Act, can be described as Nigerian version of the United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, the Child Rights Act took into consideration the specific needs of the child in his/her local settings, because of difference in culture and social orientation.

THE PATH TO REAL LIFE: LITTLE THINGS THAT MATTER

By Nnabugwu Chizoba

Dear esteemed reader.

While it may seem fashionable to see a thing(s) (in the present) and be moved or tempted to draw a comparison between that and what you had seen in the past, my charge to you is to, simply:
  • Adopt the unfashionable; which is
  • See the future and use it to judge the present.
Similarly, I have this notion, that the attitude of most or many people is to think, crave, push or demand for a bigger mirror always.
My charge is:
  • Always focus, seek and concentrate on the substance - the light.
I consider the size of the mirror unimportant, knowing and believing that the strength of the light is more important. It is the light that sharpens and strengthens the intensity of our desire to see clearer. The light is the focus (Substance). In a strong light, a small piece of mirror can be much more useful, in fact, more useful than a mirror the size of a wall, in the dark.
