NIGERIA’S BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT: IDENTIFYING THE MAJOR CHALLENGES TO STARTING A BUSINESS

The Nigerian Business environment is considered in this piece, as the aggregation of the regulatory and non-regulatory frameworks, activities, structures and initiatives that affect the operations, management and running of businesses and managing the behaviour of humans involved. Frameworks, in this context refer to the policies and laws, in Nigeria, guiding the operations of businesses, at the National, state and local government levels. That is, the institutional and regulatory conditions that govern business activities.

Waste to wealth. with improved business environment,
more of this will be created

To understand the frameworks better, the attention of my esteemed reader is drawn to the World Bank “Doing Business Survey” that identified the frameworks and processes, of the business environment. For now, my interest is on three of the frameworks, under starting a business. They are:

  • Business registration,
  • Obtaining construction permit and
  • Registering property,

Fundamentally speaking, Registering property or property registration means, obtaining the Certificate of Occupancy, also known as C of O, which simply means, obtaining the Governor’s consent, approval or permission.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MUSEUM EDUCATION DEPARTMENT, IN STIMULATING CULTURAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND PROVIDING CONCRETE CONCEPTUAL THINKING FOR NATION BUILDING AND DEVELOPMENT

The word Museum is derived from a Greek word “Mousein” meaning temple of muses dedicated to nine daughters of Zeus. The muses were responsible for the protection of the arts, dance, drama, poetry and so on.

The International Council Of Museums (ICOM) had since its inception in 1947 come up with several definitions. In 2007, ICOM came up with a definition which defines a museum as “a non-profit permanent institution in the service of the society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment” (ICOM, Vienna-Austria, 2007).

In August 24th, 2022, ICOM approved a new definition for museum as: A museum is a non-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects and conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage, open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museum fostering diversity and sustainability.

According to Programme for Museum Development in Africa (PMDA 2001), Museum Education is the totality of educational activities undertaken by a museum to effectively communicate with a diverse public, using heritage resources as its guide and catalyst. This definition asserts that Museum Education is saddled with the responsibility of taking care of all the educational activities in the museum.

Education, according to F. O Adu, is defined as the growing and shaping of individuals behaviour pattern or modification of behaviour for adequate adjustment in the society.

VIRTUAL MUSEUMS: AN INEVITABLE NECESSITY IN NIGERIAN MUSEUMS

Several definitions of museum abound and have evolved over the years. From the Greek word “Museion” which implies “a sanctuary dedicated to the muses of Greek mythology, “to its recent definitions of an “institution for research, teaching, exhibition and conservation”(Encyclopedia Americana, 1964). By August 2007, ICOM came up with a definition of museum which states that:
“A museum is a non-profit permanent institution in the service of the society and its development, open to the public which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purpose of education, study and enjoyment.”

This definition not only covers the functions of a museum but its activities in partnership with the society particularly focusing on its development. This definition has been under review and is being redefined. However,a new definition came to light this year after a general conference in Prague on 24th of August, 2022, during ICOM extraordinary General Assembly. This new definition of museum states:

Socio-cultural Significance of Aso-ebi, and the Obvious Plight, Economically, of the Plateau Woman

By Binkat Manji Jennifer,  Institute of Archaeology and Museum Studies, Jos

Abstract

Aso-ebi (called anco in the North) refers to a uniform dressing among family friends or associates during festivities, which is often done in traditional materials or local fabrics. This is a practice that evolved among the Yoruba speaking of western Nigeria. Over the years, it has spread both nationally and internationally, and Plateau state is no exception. Aso-ebi is generally a unifier and plays a huge role among the people. This study seeks to examine the socio-cultural significance of aso-ebi on the Plateau woman, whose economy is not buoyant enough to maintain, especially, the changing phase of this fashion trend. This research focuses on the qualitative research methodology, utilizing observation and interview methods, for its findings.

Keywords:- Aso-ebi, culture, significance

Introduction

Besides the general notion of covering nudity, clothes are worn for variety of reasons, such as protection against the weather, insects, infections or other bodily harm. Clothes give elegance and make people civil.

Generally, clothes communicate a lot about the wearers’ identities, nobility and overall character traits or moral values. Clothes also help to conceal unwanted body inscriptions and/or physical disabilities, too. Furthermore, the differences in what we wear also depict our sex/gender, age, affiliations, beliefs, profession, social status and identities, etc. To maintain certain social status or relationships, people go extra miles to acquire specific clothes. This is the case with the Aso-ebi.
