COMPETENCE AND FUNCTIONAL SKILL, TOOLS TO GET THE BEST OUT OF THE AFRICAN FILM INSTITUTE'S (AFI) SKILL ACQUISITION PROGRAMME IN PLATEAU STATE

Investigation cum Interrogation scene. One of the classroom sessions of the programme

"Competence and its companion, functional skill, are fundamental tools for the success minded. They are critical tools, necessary for the attainment of worthwhile results. They stand in a strategic position, and to a large extent determine the success of individuals and Nations on one hand, and on the other hand their failure.

"Competence and functional skill, are essential to sustainable growth and  development. They are to success what blood is to the body"... Nnabugwu Chizoba

The statement above, though brief, captures my understanding of how important the tools of "Competence and Functional Skill" are to humans.

To the participants of the skill acquisition programme in Film Making and Creative Media Production, holding in Jos, Plateau state, please, marry them: Competence and Functional Skill. In the language of the Genz, in case that is the one you understand better or for any prefer to use, let me put it this way, please "collabor" with them.

The skill acquisition Programme is implemented by the African Film Institute, with support of the Federal Government of Nigeria, through collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, Nigeria, in alliance with two Federal Empowerment initiatives: the Innovative Development for Effectiveness in Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS), and the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) programme.

The need for the young participants of the programme to understand the importance of "Competence and Functional Skill", and take them two very serious is increasingly and genuinely overwhelming. Beyond the need to understand their importance, is the need to imbibe and integrate them into the on-going programme of the African Film institute, as a core requirement. This alone is also not enough. Please, take action on your decision. Do the needful as you commit faithfully, to the activities of the programme.

Aware of the harsh economic situation faced by Nigerians, and equally, aware of the huge socio-economic benefits that could accrue to Plateau state, and Nigeria as a whole, from the AFI's programme, I do not habour any trepidations in my conclusion that best option for than those participating in the programme is to rise in unison and give the programme their best and acquire the skills of film making and creative Media Production in a competent and Functional manner. Do this without living anything for chance. The benefits are huge.

As I make this piece, my obsession to the AFI programme continues to heighten, with no check in sight.

Class in session

I consider the AFI programme one of a kind and I am very proud to say here, that is what it is. The programme is an enviable, game changer, very essential for the development of Plateau state and Nigeria.

Participants of the programme are therefore, encouraged to see there participation as a unique opportunity to play active role in the efforts towards revamping ailing Nigeria's economy. They must embrace and handle the programme as something very special to them. They must regard it as a tested and trusted product for human capacity building and Empowerment. They impact is huge, if handled property. Programme of this nature have proven records of success and impact, though from other climes. Nothing stops the programme in Plateau state from producing multiple empowering results and in diverse ways and areas.

I enjoin the participants of the Film making and creative Media Production programme in Plateau state to consider what the African Film Institute has thrown up in Jos, Plateau state as a socio-economic development package designed by the AFI to transform the state and Nigeria as a whole.

The only thing that can stop or limit the programme from producing the massive effect similar programmes on other climes have had on the environment is lack of competent and functional skills. Therefore, it is only the participants that can limit the reach and the impact or frustrate it totally, make or mar the programme. The option is entirely theirs.

Let me with emphasis draw the attention of the members of the public by noting that the success of the programme is beyond the direct participants of the programme.

Inauguration

Let me also emphasise that every Plateau state resident that include, state government officials: elected and appointed; traditional rulers; and all the 17 local governments area officials: elected and appointed are by default, participants of the programme also.

The above salient point must be embraced by all and sundry. In view of this, let me call on all affected by the categorisation above, and use the opportunity to remind them that they are also participants of the programme, and are therefore, critical stakeholders, who must see the need to play their own role and to ensure that the programme succeeds.

Plateau state residents, individually and collectively, must identify through collective participation and engagements, what role it is that they must play consistently towards improving the programme, and advancing the environment. They must bear in mind that they as major stakeholders

Like the direct participants, the indirect ones are expected to prepare and play there role effectively and efficiently. At the appropriate time and place, the indirect participants of the programme must proof also that they are competent and functional.
